Quiero que un canvas esté al 100% de ancho de su contenedor y que la altura sea dinámica.

Este canvas tiene que mostrar una imagen, la cual tiene medidas de 1080x1920.

Tenía el canvas de esta manera

Y mi javascript de esta manera.

Esto funciona para mostrar la imagen correctamente, ya que en la etiqueta canvas le indico las dimensiones, y en la pantalla se ve bien siempre y cuando esté utilizando una pantalla que de la resolución. Pero lo que quiero es que el canvas pueda tener el 100% de su contenedor (Digamos que es un 500px), cargue la imagen y la muestre de manera correcta.

En mi caso tengo una imagen cuadrada por lo tanto en el CSS guardo las proporciones del #contenedor En el JS hago la anchura y la altura del canvas iguales a la anchura y la altura del #contenedor. Una función llamada init() recalcula el valor de la anchura y la altura del canvas y las utiliza para dibujar la imagen.

Una observación: como que el evento resize se dispara con una frecuencia muy alta se recomienda utilizarla dentro de un setTimeout
