¿Cuál es el error en estos códigos de PHP? (Warning: mysqli_num_rows() exp..)(Warning: mysqli_fetch_array() exp...)

Estoy siguiendo un tutorial para crear un feed en Android. Ya he creado la base de datos y he subido los scripts de PHP al host, pero me salen estos errores:

Warning: mysqli_num_rows() expects parameter 1 to be mysqli_result, boolean given in /home/u216588924/public_html/feed.php on line 16

Warning: mysqli_fetch_array() expects parameter 1 to be mysqli_result, boolean given in /home/u216588924/public_html/feed.php on line 36 []

Las advertencias te sale porque mysqli_num_rows() te devuelvo un false, cual significa que tu query tiene un fallo (ej.: no encuentra el campo o la tabla).

Para saber y manejar el fallo puedes usar el siguiente código:

El error puede ser por dos casos:

1. La query esta mal hecha y da error de mysql, porlo que el código: while($row = mysqli_fetch_array($result)){ da error
2. O bien no devuelve resultados. Para este caso te recomiendo que utilices este if: if ($result->num_rows > 0) { esto lo tienes que poner antes del while

Estas haciendo mal la consulta SQL si quieres el número total de registros deberías hacer:

SELECT COUNT(column_name) FROM table_name;
